Andrea Arteaga, M.D.

Dr. Andrea Arteaga is a distinguished, board-certified ophthalmologist with a rich educational journey and extensive expertise in the field. She graduated from medical school at the prestigious “Luis Razetti” School of Medicine at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. Her postgraduate training commenced with an Ophthalmology degree at Fundacion AVAO – Universidad de Los Andes in Caracas. During her career in Venezuela, Dr Arteaga was always involved with many underserved communities.

Dr Arteaga moved to Chicago to continue her training. To further enhance her knowledge, she enrolled in a clinical research fellowship in Cornea and Ocular Surface at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Then completed a Preliminary Year in Internal Medicine at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center followed by a second ophthalmology residency at the prestigious Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, University of Illinois at Chicago. Driven by her passion, she pursued a Cornea and External Disease Fellowship at the same institution.

Her commitment to excellence is evident through various honors and awards, including her appointment as Administrative Chief Resident at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Ophthalmology department. Dr Arteaga has multiple publications in peer reviewed journals as well as many podium presentations in well renowned national and international meetings.

Dr. Arteaga actively participates in the Venezuelan Society of Ophthalmology, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Merida State Physician Society, and the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology. She mentors in the Illinois Ophthalmology Pipeline Program and is a dedicated member of LATINOUS, reflecting her commitment to fostering growth and diversity within the medical community.

Fluent in both Spanish and English, Dr. Arteaga facilitates effective communication with patients with different cultural backgrounds embodying a global perspective evident in her journey from medical education in Venezuela to specialized training in the United States. Dr Arteaga’s highest interest is to preserve, restore and improve vision of her patients to help them achieve all their visual goals.

During her free time, Dr Arteaga enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, baking and cooking.
